Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
