A comprehensive search and recovery operation is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of unlocated boats transporting aid cargo en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least 9 sailors, as stated by a official statement.
The boats had been expected to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.
"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative associated with the mission said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the country.
That boat, called "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and food.
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
International organizations have since warned of ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic tensions have increased over the past months, with statements from various officials emphasizing the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
In response to recent statements, a senior government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to locate the boats and ensure the security of the people on board.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
