Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
