Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
The industry says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
