New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately after his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my work," he affirmed.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his humble Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
