After a pivotal victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has substantially reduced the margin in the championship standings. He now finds himself just twelve points behind leader Lando Norris and in front of teammate his McLaren rival, everything is in place for a nail-biting three-way title decider at the renowned Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's latest win was anything but conventional. Although he delivered a superb drive for Red Bull, the victory was heavily influenced by a costly strategic call from the McLaren team. Choosing not to pit during an initial safety car period, McLaren presented the initiative to Verstappen, who capitalized without hesitation.
"I'm excited, I'm happy to go there and fight for it," he stated. "I approach it with just good vibes. I'll push to the limit I can but at the same time, even without the title, I still know that I had an amazing season."
This outlook he claims removes much of the pressure. The goal for the final round is clear: to get the most from every single element from himself and the RB21.
The incredible part of Verstappen's championship charge so impressive is how far he has recovered. Following the Zandvoort round in August, he was a massive over a century of points behind the then-leader his rival and had essentially conceded his championship hopes.
The reversal began with significant car developments introduced by his team at the Monza. Adjustments to the car's floor and aerodynamic package solved persistent balance issues, allowing Verstappen to regain confidence with the car once more.
Following those upgrades, the results has been nothing short of dominant, achieving five wins and several top-three finishes. He was eager to credit the collective effort behind this success.
"We've won races where maybe we shouldn't have, by executing the optimal strategy as a team," he explained. "The way I work with my engineer, GP and the entire crew... we are really well integrated."
As the teams travel to Abu Dhabi, the championship picture is utterly compelling.
The spotlight now shifts on the papaya-colored cars, who have watched a comfortable advantage slip away due to unfortunate events, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. From his perspective, this position creates an atmosphere of freedom, turning the final race into a straight shot at the title with nothing to lose.
