James understood his incredible run of scoring in double figures was threatened. At the decisive instant, though, he wasn't bothered.
The smart move involved passing the rock – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, the unprecedented record was over.
James's astounding run of 1,297 consecutive regular-season outings scoring at least ten was snapped this past Thursday, as the league's career points king had only eight total points during the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 victory over the Toronto Raptors. He provided the game-winning assist, feeding Rui Hachimura to hit a three-pointer as time expired.
“Zero,” James said when asked on the record concluding. “The important thing is we won.”
LeBron had the chance to attempted to win the game – and extended the streak – on the final possession, yet he opted to dish the ball to Rui stationed in the corner. Hachimura made the shot, and James celebrated with his hands in the air.
It's about playing the game the right way. You always make the smart play,” James noted. “That’s just been how I operate. It's how I was instructed to play. That's what I've done for two decades.”
James is acutely aware of his point total he's scored at any point,” stated Lakers coach the coach. He acted just as he has countless times.”
He returned to the contest for the final time with 5:23 remaining, the result along with the historic run up for grabs. He had a mere six points on 3-of-15 shooting at that juncture.
He managed a basket at 1:46 left to level the contest and missed a 14-footer with 1:01 left which could have pushed him to double digits.
He avoided taking a subsequent shot – even though he had a chance. A teammate found him in the waning seconds, however, James opted to make the pass instead of shooting.
The spirits of the game, when you play it correctly, they will reward you,” Redick stated.
This incredible run started on Jan. 6, 2007. It was easily the longest such streak in NBA history: Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem recorded 787 such games, and Karl Malone recorded of 575 games.
“He’s such a pass-first superstar,” said teammate Jake LaRavia.
He focuses on playing hoops. He had the opportunity but given his nature as a player and his personality as a person, he executed the team play, passed it to Rui and claimed the game.”
Scoring in double figures was usually a guarantee early in the fourth quarter began. Throughout his run, he had attained ten points by the start of the fourth on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
However, two of those unusual single-digit games after three periods had occurred in the last week: He had nine entering the final quarter against Dallas on 28 November, followed by six points before the fourth quarter versus the Suns on Monday night.
James managed to keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. One game later, it concluded – yet he was celebrating regardless.
“I always just make the right play. That is instinctive, win, lose or draw,” James said. If you make the smart play, the sports deities are always giving back to me.”
