Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
