London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
