American thespian and writer Jeremy O Harris, best known for the award-contending production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an airport in Japan on allegations involving attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, authorities stated.
Harris, 36, was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer discovered 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance laced with the designer drug MDMA in his tote bag, according to a customs spokesperson.
He was promptly taken into custody on suspicion of breaching Japan’s strict Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.
Local customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the public prosecutor to commence legal action against the individual.
A law enforcement representative in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has admitted to the charges.
Presently, it is unclear whether the artist has secured legal representation in Japan. Requests for comment to his management team were not immediately returned.
Reports indicate Harris had arrived in Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain with a layover in Taiwan. Okinawa is a frequent tourist spot south-west of Tokyo, famous for its coastlines and U.S. bases.
Japan maintains some of the toughest narcotics regulations among industrialized countries. Having or trafficking even minute quantities of banned drugs typically results in legal proceedings.
Foreign nationals arrested in Japan for alleged drug offences in the past include former Australian rugby league player Blake Ferguson in 2021. In a famous 1980 case, ex-Beatles member Paul McCartney was detained after landing in Tokyo with marijuana and was afterwards barred from the country for years.
Beyond his theatrical work, Jeremy O Harris is also known for his acting role in the series Emily in Paris and for producing the HBO drama Euphoria.
