Democratic officials voiced anger after former President Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be detained and penalized "by death" following their posting of a controversial video.
The clip, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who previously acted in armed forces or defense positions.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to defend and defend this constitution," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you should decline improper directives. No one has to follow orders that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a combined announcement denouncing the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged digital publications and retract his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who love this country and made an vow to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress instructing troops to defy commands, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and determine all that."
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative said. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our military rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
