Over the weekend, the game developers launched a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but includes a few key changes:
So essentially, the playlist lives up to its name: it's a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it provides additional choices for gamers seeking alternative ways to have fun with the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 players are mad.
"People want real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your rivals," states one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," comments a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and another lists everything they believe to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
However, amid the criticism, there are players sharing how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, real players prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title all the time. Let them strike a balance," adds a different comment. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase wait times more extended for other modes because of the sheer number of options in the game already. Similarly, certain regions often face mostly bots in the existing playlists. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the system. Thus this new playlist feels like the community meeting them in the middle, as per forum feedback. A different user describes this mode as the devs "making a mistake significantly, I experienced so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it's that they're listening and responding to player input. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
