Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his team can keep managing with player absences following disclosing that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for several more weeks.
Havertz has been out since August due to knee surgery. Initially expected to be available at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when increasing his recovery and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.
This news creates a tactical puzzle for the midweek match against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position last weekend, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly off the bench off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is available after 11 months out.
More doubts involve centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.
The manager is convinced the substantial investment on new players ahead of this season has placed the club in a much stronger position to handle such setbacks.
In response if increased squad depth was helping their title quest, his response was positive. “Yes, since the current term has been worse in some areas, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he added.
“Our previous experiences taught us that we need to utilize players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel Merino.”
Addressing the setback highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the required step and now it’s looking like we have overcome that hurdle.”
Arteta expressed his keenness to see him return. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, for me, I admire greatly for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his nature. I observe his frustration being outside.”
“His fitness history is exceptional, he's rarely been injured, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back with the squad playing because I feel it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
